metro is getting high marks. metro is much safer than it was a year ago. >> reporter: good news for a change. it was just a few months ago that the national transportation satisfactory board blasted metro for the anemic safety culture th say existed at the time of that deadly crash. now, the ntsb is recognizing them for strides they have made over the last year to improve safety. the chairman of the ntsb said metro is safer now than it was back in 2009. metro has made significant safety improvements in the year following a collision that left nine dead. that the word from the national transportation safety board. >> they have done a lot of learning in the last year plus, and i think that always every organization is going to go through a difficult time after an accident. the question is how you react to that accident and what changes you make. and i believe that the metro board was very willing to listen to the safety board after our report was concluded.

and they have taken many of those lessons to heart. and i think they're beginning to make many improvements that have been long overdue. >> reporter: in an update to congress, ntsb said metro impmented more than a dozen safety improvements they recommended and is moving in the right direction. e anemic safe culture set the stage for the crash. improvements include putting a new and experienced safety officer in place. he reports directly to the germ manager. metro has filled a dozen vacancies and jobs related. and set up a hotline where workers can anonymously report safety problems. metro is moving forward to replace the 1000 series cars, the cars that crunched in the crash. new cars will hit the system in about 13. interim manager agrees metro is safer now than a year ago but says there's still a long way to go.

this morning fifighters are still putting out hot spots after this fire destroyed three homes in northern virginia. firefighters had to call three alarms because it spread so quickly. it happened in the 8300 block of tillet loop in manassas. elaine reyes is live on the scene with the cleanup. good morning sglor good morning, eun. it goes to show how hot the fi was. it is still under investigation. we are in the summer lake area of manassas, just outside, ma mass as. 11 residents are displace and the red cross is helping them. the fire started at a home around 3:00 yesterday afternoon. the wind caused the fire to spread to two other homes. all three burned to the ground. smoak and flames spread to five other homes, bringing it to a total of eight. they suffered damage. two people at the scene were treated for minor injuries.

>> reporter: good morning, eun. just to show you how hot the fire was, firefighters have been here all night long. there's a pile of what used to be a house that is still smoking behind this chain link fence here are two now empty lots where two houses once stood. 11 residents were disaced in this viciny. the red cross is helping them. this was a three-alarm fire. it started at a home on tillet loop 3:00 yesterday afternoon. firefighters say the wind caused the fi to spread. all three burned. smoak and flames spread to five other homes. they suffered moderate damage. >> i ran to the guy's house. he was in the house. like a teenager of some sort. he was in a panic trying to call the fire department. i told him we have to get out of the house. i went into his garage. i seen him.
